MICROCURRENT
Microcurrent is a physical therapy modality that has been used for twenty plus years with thousands of horses treated with great success. Used for sore muscles, tendon and ligaments injuries, abscesses, laminitis, paralysis, confounding lameness problems, TMJ, neurological problems, etc. Considerably reducing the recovery time to about half of normal in many instances.
Is it FDA Approved? Yes the MasterStim Micro is a Class II instrument approved for use on humans. It is known as the " best of the best". Quality, accuracy, & features unsurpassed in its class. Commonly called "The Clinic in a Box". It is in the same class (family) as TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulator). Successfully used by many sports medicine clinics and is especially well-known for its success in treating professional athletes such as football player Terry Bradshaw, PGA player Fuzzy Zoeller, The New York Knicks, and the U.S. Olympic water-skiing and track and field teams.
How is Micro Current different from the other TENS family? There is one major difference. One microcurrent is 1,000th of a milli amp. This creates an extremely mild current operating at the same levels of the human & animal body cells. It has been showed that levels of 750 micro amps & up lose their healing ability. The instruments in the TENS family are more for pain control.
How Does it Work? Simply put: We are all electrically charged beings. Trauma and injury cause living cells to lose their electrical charge. Your body seems to use the Microcurrent energy to increase its own energy production. Microcurrent increases the production of ATP, your own chemical energy, by up to 500%. It also increases protein synthesis and waste product removal.
How do the frequencies work? The frequencies appear to work on the principle of biologic resonance. A singer can shatter a glass when the note resonates with the crystal structure of the glass. Microcurrent frequencies seem to be able to resonate with biologic tissue and change the structure of the tissue when the frequency is correct. Once the tissue is changed and stable it seems to be able to stay in the new configuration.
Is it safe? Very! However it still requires proper and responsible use as in the use of all modalities.
What are the benefits of Frequency Specific MicroCurrent therapy? Microcurrent treatment is painless, increases speed of recovery, often promotes healing in conditions that have not responded to other treatment, and is cost effective. The effects are long lasting and the healing of tissue is more complete.
How fast can I expect results? There are many parameters to consider. Is the injury acute or chronic, minor or major. The results can be experienced in as little as one treatment. The average is three to five for simple problems, and more for more serious conditions.
Is there much research in this area ? YES! The first book written in layman terms that does a beautiful job of recapping the beginning of this industry is; "The Body Electric", by Robert O. Becker, M.D. & Gary Selden. Since then, the increase in knowledge in the use of this modality has been phenomenal !
What about "far out claims", are they true ? Its a valuable tool that should be considered in many applications. Working as a health care professional or with one, its one more way to achieve optimal health in a non-invasive way.
IONTOPHORESIS
Iontophoresis was introduced to the American Association of Equine Practitioners meeting in 1997. It is a fancy way of saying “to transfer drugs through the skin using electrical current“. Also called Ion Transfer, using current to drive water soluble medication into subcutaneous tissue.
So why Phorese? There is limited information with regards to equine use, but enough to make it viable, particularly if you are looking a alternatives to injections. In the past, resistance to Phoresing was partly due to equipment costs and time. Very few veterinarians will loan out the equipment.
A limited amount of Medications are considered phoresaible.
Iontophoresis is an attractive mode of drug delivery for the equine practitioner because of the minimal ionic concentrations required for its effectiveness, and because of its non-invasive nature.
Iontophoresis compared to Needle injections are:
*Non invasive
*No infection
*No tissue damage
*Trace amounts of medications
*Can produce a more diffused delivery of medications.
The best results reported are for:
*Splints
*Degenerative Joint Disease
*Ring Bone
*Check and Suspensory Ligament problems
*Tendon injuries such as small tears

*surface musculoskeletal injuries.
Iontophoresis is offered upon referral and a diagnosis from your veterinarian. Prescribed medications will be used in cooperation with the referring veterinarian.
